Jobs in Maldives

Permalink 12:35:11 pm, Categories: General, Maldives

This is only applicable for Qualified categories.

Dear friends, if you have any plans to come to Maldives. please note that the currency and the cost of living is very very different than Sri Lanka. Also please get some ideas from friends who live in the Maldives. For your information I would like to tell you some information.

1. Ask for accommodation not allowance for accommodation. Since in Maldives all the apartment rentals are very high, please do not ask for a allowance for accommodation. If you ask for a allowance the company will give you only about Rf.4,000 to Rf.6,000 for this money you can not even get a single room, ohhhhh forget about sharing apartments. If the company is not willing to give you a accommodation and they are willing to give only allowance ask for over Rf 10,000 at least  you can find a private one room apartment. Rf.10,000 is about Rs.85,000.

2. The electricity & water, don’t forget to ask billing allowance to pay your electricity & water. In Maldives water bill comes like petroleum cooperation bills. And also it is NOT recommended to drink even after heating the water. Ok you can heat the water and drink but every vacation you go to Sri Lanka make sure to go and do a kidney stone check up with a good doctor. So I am recommending you to drink mineral water (I am sorry no mineral water for sale in Maldives but you can buy mineralized water). Electricity, as usual it is more than water bill.

3. Medicals, basically are no highly qualified doctors in Maldives, Some Indian doctors are coming for $100 per month salary also. I have good experience with this doctors. Anyway for small things ok, but about 90% of the people goes to Sri Lanka for Medical Treatments. Even the medical charges are very very high. So don’t forget about medical allowance.

4. Food allowance, usually all the companies are giving Rf.1000 as food allowance, depending on your Job category it will change.

5. Salary, If you are coming for the salary less than $400 forget about Maldives. If you are coming above $400 can do something.

Story that made me to write this blog:
Ok I live in Maldives,  recently I got a mail from one of my friend asking where I am, I said I’m Maldives and he replied me he is also in Maldives and he gave me the address and company name so i met him. I was happy to see him in Maldives and he has come one day after getting married with his wife. Since he had a situation that he wanted to go some where he has come here without any ideas and any commitment. He is happy with salary but the company provides a very small allowance for both of them and cant even think about a private accommodation. By the time I met him it was 1 week in Maldives. For this one week they have moved to over 5 places. Finally they have got a jut a room with no bath room but the bath room is out side of the room and have to share with the people who live there. He has some Indian people living in the house. And all of them sleep and eat in the same hall, so they have to go home early. I was so worried about this issue since the day I met them. Other thing is finding accommodation in Maldives is not easy. Since this couple is  newly married, they need some freedom to enjoy the life, need some privacy to have fun. Now we are searching for a better place for them, hope they will get it soon. I wish for them a good life.

So my dear friends, if you have any idea to work in Maldives, Please consider about the points I have mentioned above.

Thanks You.

After reading this article about living in Maldives, it seems like to me that it is similar to living under the bridge of Kelani River. But don;t think that the srilankans who are living in any other countries living in heaven either. In Kuwait there are so many srilankans living in one room. The recruiting agencies lie so much to the people before they get here.once they get here there is no way that they can return back to their home country. Same way in the europe. So what is the different.

Absolutely right, its good that you put all these on a blog and sharing wit others.

I ve been to Male' 2 times, and was there about 4 months.

About medical facilities, its better not to get diagnosis from these unqualified doctors. Once my friend went 2 ADK Hospital as he had chest pain and he was told by the doctor consulted " Don't be afraid, you have a heart problem one valve is blocked in the heart". Subsequently it was found after consulting a Doc in SL the chest pain was due to gastritises. In my opinion its better to ask for medical allowance but not to see a doctor. If you are not well better comeback to SL and get the treatments.

Why don't you write on foods and vegetable prices and availability of food items in the islands and their price levels.

My conclusion is if you are single you can go there and earn & enjoy only if all the expenses are borne by the company.

Don't go to other countries unless you know
that you are qualified to be something other
than labor. These people do not give a hoot
who you are and many countries have very
low human values. specially for forigners. Then
the laws are crazy. Unless you are going to go
to Canada, USA or other country that has basic
human values. forget it.

Middle East-- Forget it.. Very few humans in
that part of the world with an idea of other
humans.. They only know about ...Countries like
USA.. not easy to come but opportunities there
to grow.

Dear Friends,

In every country, with every company, there are good things as well as bad things. Use the above information provided by our friend as a guide only. Surely the information is very useful but don’t take decisions and come to conclusions about this particular country or anything else by having read or learned only form one person or one source. Do your own research. But do get as much as information you can get from all the possible sources with an open mind. Then evaluate your situation and take a decision. Remember, if you have a will there is a way. Every person is different and the needs are different. When some one ask me about a place that I know, I usually tell them the different conditions that I know. But I keep my self from commenting whether something is good or bad because, in my humble opinion, what is bad for me might be good for someone else and vise versa. It is important to give information about general life style about a place or country when some one asks about it. Such information should be very broad. Cost of accommodation, shared, rent purchase. Facilities available. Medical coverage. Food prices. Travelling costs. Available Entertainment. Law of the country. Any restrictions. General salary range. General monthly expenses range. Expenses if single or married. Children’s education. Safety factors. Possibility to save some money. Career growth. Well known and established organizations in the country. And the list can go on. But I repeat, do not get discourage or be over enthusiasm by listening to one or few individuals. Just like that God has made you different from others, remember that your conditions also will be different than to others. You only should have the control of your life and use this type of information to take an “informed” decision. Good luck.

I thought I will share one of my experiences with you all so that it will help you to understand the rationale behind by previous post.

One day, one of my close relatives came to met me and ask me about a particular country as I had known about that country. Immediately I got to know that he was planning to go there but due to what ever the reasons he did not tell me the complete background or the information about the job. Neither had he revealed how he was planning to go, etc. When I advice someone, first I put myself into that condition and explain the things that I would like to know if I am the one who wants to know. In my view, we should prepare ourselves for the worst condition. If anything goes wrong, anyway our mind is prepared and perhaps we might already have an alternative plan readily available. But if we have taken everything for granted and something goes wrong, we might end up with further troubles. If all goes well, then consider it was a bonus for you.

So, I explained about the country to this person. I told them how people are suffering without jobs, food, accommodation and medicines. How the agencies have cheated people by promising high salaries but later given jobs in farms, etc though it was told to them as skilled labor. Then I explained the cost of living, weather conditions (how hot during summer and how cold during winter). Basically, I told him more about the bad side so that he will know that it is not to a heaven he was planning to go. Usually, for a first timer in SL, I have seen that people think that they are going to a heaven like place when they talk about going abroad.

Ok, this person was thankful to me for the information and after couple of weeks, I got to know from someone else that he had gone. Rest of the information I got to know after a long time from someone else.

After a month, he had received his first salary. He might have been very happy to see a big amount of money in his hand. He had written a letter, which I saw later, to a relative scolding me for telling him lies. He had mentioned that everything I had told him was not true and he has a good life.

While I was happy that he has a good life, I was deeply worried about his comments as I had not told him any lies. I only told him to be careful and to take an informed decision without getting into any trouble. I had guided him to find out about the contract, find out about the company, etc. He was given the VISA and taken by another Sri Lankan working in the same company. As i was upset about his comments, I told this to one of my friends who knew about me a lot and who had experienced what I was telling. He told me only one thing. He said "That guy has been there only one month. After a while, he will understand".

Do you want to know what happened....that guy had to suffer a lot with all sort of things I had told him. He had no job, had to depend on friends for food and accommodation. He had to face some other issues which I don't want to mention on this post. And finally had to leave that country after about 6 months. Interestingly, he had told his parents and my parents that all what I had told him was correct and no one should go to that country. But there are many SLs in that country who likes to be there as they have a very good life there.

So, I hope that you will understand more about my previous post now.....

Writing important facts about jobs in Maldives, you have done a great work that will help young people seeking employment in Maldives and Middle East jobs. Your writing gives information on difficulties that one should expect when go for foreign employment, also your blog gives an idea of the beautiful side of living in Maldives pictorially. A good example of putting your leisure time in very useful work that will help in others too.

Why don’t you write some information about the good side as well?
